My son has no issues with addiction but this movie addresses the difficulty in watching your child hurt when You are helpless to assist. Very emotional. All the actors were good in my mind and I did not have the critics trouble with the memories and pacing. Not sure at this point if watching Timothee Chalamet watching paint dry would not be worth the time invested based on his current work thus far.

Wow! Just got back from a Beautiful Boy and my eyes are still filled with tears. The acting is so beautifly done, definitely a must see. You really feel the pain and suffering that comes along with a drug addict's story. Something I would love to see again.

Many critics are citing directing and editing as a distraction/barrier from being able to find an emotional connection to these characters and this story - I found it quite the opposite. The film is edited in such a way as to define just how saturated the lives of those who experience the disease of addiction becomes. It is all encompassing and there is no linear story when it comes to addiction - point A does not lead to point B and so on. Instead life becomes a sort of zig zag where the direction of life no longer applies in quite the same way. Chalamet, Carell, and the less noted Maura Tierney deliver performances that not only honor the true lives of the Sheff family, but also respect the lives of those impacted with the plight of addiction. See it with someone you love as it is also, at its heart, a story of how we love, and of how invaluable unconditional love can be.

This is an excellent portrayal of both books, father and son. And Timothy Chalamet is particularly excellent as Nic. Steve Carell also manifests excellently the intense physical pain of his emotional state that Nic's father goes through as he helplessly watches Nic self-destroy. Maybe you'd have to have read both books to really appreciate the movie, and it might seem like just an incredibly sad story otherwise, but it has to be told and seen.
