Persepolis (2007)

In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Satrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own.

An absolutely gripping film, if in no other way than visually. The animation pulls from incredibly different sources, looking at times like Tintin, South Park, and Frank Miller graphic novels all mixed into one. Direction is somewhere between Rosselini and Tim Burton. And yet, it looks completely different than any of the above. The story is charming, simple but complex, heavy but with funny moments (some darker than others). The politics seem reasonable, I'm no expert but the movie focuses more on the people in Iran than the ideology behind the country's history, and bias or no it's a good little story. Good enough that Persepolis will likely become a standby in introductory post-colonial film (and literature) courses - and they could do worse. One of the best of 2007, no question.

I just got around to watching this... felt the timing was right with the recent election fraud in Iran... and my personal mood was just right at last. Such a moving animation with all the right elements. Sad, but beautiful.

Marjane Satrapi est une femme pour qui la vie a été plus que ténébreuse et dans ce film autobiographique miracle elle nous offre tout en magie en profondeur en rire aux éclats. C'est un film d'animation nouveau genre un genre qui me plait particulièrement dans la même vague que Valse avec Bashir, un drame qui devient beau, une horreur qui devient oeuvre.

An animated masterpiece based on the non-fiction graphic novels of Marjane Satrapi. Adult themed animation about a girl's struggle to survive and cope with Iranian society. Has romance, war and heartbreak all beautifully interwoven.

An excellent movie for all people with an Islamic background to watch and try and understand what works with people and what obviously doesn't. Ofcourse the non-Muslim can also learn a lot from this movie in trying to understand the difficulties that any Muslim faces when growing up in a country which does not allow a person to just be themselves even. Excellent watch!
