Persepolis (2007)

In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Satrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own.

Fascinating! don't know why I didn't watch it before

An amazing film! This is one of the best animated films I've ever seen. I love the character of Marjane. Seldom do we see such a fiery, passionate character take center stage, and it is in this most interesting setting that makes the premise of this film work so well. What's not to love about this film? It has: history, culture, comedy, war, religion, conflict, drama, suspense, love, pain, happiness, misery, passion, sacrifice, character growth, artistic originality and creativity, and a rare resounding poignancy. Beautiful, captivating, mesmerizing, and unforgettable.

Really great! Touching personal story of young girl/woman who went through Iranian revolution and then her struggle as a woman and as an Iranian woman in Europe. Great animation!

An absolutely gripping film, if in no other way than visually. The animation pulls from incredibly different sources, looking at times like Tintin, South Park, and Frank Miller graphic novels all mixed into one. Direction is somewhere between Rosselini and Tim Burton. And yet, it looks completely different than any of the above. The story is charming, simple but complex, heavy but with funny moments (some darker than others). The politics seem reasonable, I'm no expert but the movie focuses more on the people in Iran than the ideology behind the country's history, and bias or no it's a good little story. Good enough that Persepolis will likely become a standby in introductory post-colonial film (and literature) courses - and they could do worse. One of the best of 2007, no question.

Satrapi portrays a love of Iran without being revisionist or disguising any harsh truths about the regime. This is an exceptional and exceptionally moving piece of animated filmmaking.
