Beautiful Kate (2009)

Ned Kendall is asked to return to the remote and isolated family home by his sister, to say goodbye to his father who is dying. Ned also brings his young aspiring actress fiancee who struggles with the isolation. When home he starts having memories of his childhood many involving his beautiful twin sister and his older brother. These memories awaken long-buried secrets from the family's past.

A very Australian film. Understated, brutal, under-budgeted, raw... and so on. Bloke returns home to country (my friend observed that Americans do the Wild West in a grandiose way, where as Australians show the outback blowflies and all)... Looking after his estranged Dad, picks over the details of that "last summer" when two of his siblings died. Rachel Griffiths, as always, an understated delight - the only wrong note was the city girlfriend Toni - who was, as my friend said, a "little too Summer Bay". Good to see that Bryan Brown has gone from central blokey hero to crabby old dying bastard... much more believable...

I was just completely bowled over by the emotions in this film. It's a very strongly emotional film, with wonderful performances.

Wow! Was lucky enough to score tickets to an exclusive screening of this awesome film with surprise appearances by Rachael Ward, Bryan Brown, Ben Mendelson, and more. The movie evolves around moral grey areas and a pretty taboo subject. It brilliantly presented some haunting insights into human emotions. Set mainly in one small outback house with only a handful of characters, its superb direction and cast made me feel every human emotion possible. Was refreshing to find NO hollywood flashy special effects, storyline, actors or budgets in this aptly described 'Classic Australian Gothic'.*****
