To its credit, "Barry" never aims for profound statements about Obama. Instead, it presents an interesting portrait of someone navigating between cultures in a country that continues to insist on labeling.

Barry is for all the lost souls getting punched by strangers in alien hallways, it is for all the wanderers with nowhere to be. It captures the beautifully conflicted dumpster-fire that the world is right now.

It's inferior to its supplemental, yet unrelated production-wise successor "Southside with You", with a similar and "accurately-differing" narrative, due to the feeling of hollowness at a unique balance of bland spikes that can be seen as a realistic pace during Obama's start in college with a taste of his well-known inspiring morality. It's enjoyably relatable on the role of college education and how reflective the years are for an individual, and Devon Terrell's performance, the second actor to portray Obama before his historical presidency, demonstrated that exceptionally, and charismatically, with a fresh insight. Unlike your standard Oliver Stone president movie, Barry takes a very specific look at just one year in Obama's life, his arrival in New York and first year in Columbia University. Because of this, you really don't get a big picture look at his youth like you might have hoped. You do get a more intimate look at him though. Even without the Obama angle, it's an interesting character piece about a mixed-race man in the 80s with a diverse background finding his place. The fact that you know this man becomes the president just adds another level of intrigue to the whole thing. It's a smaller movie, and it's not perfect, but it's interesting and emotional and it works.

[Barry's] search for an identity is the ignition and combustion of the film. The exhaust, however, comes courtesy of Philip Morris. And the odor, like that surrounding the film itself, is of provocation in service of no cogent point.
