What is Kubrick's greatest film? WRONG! It's Barry Lyndon. I've watched it 50x in the two years I've owned it: first on inferior dvd, then on bluray (remastered), and 2x on big screen. It's a straight forward, ambient glimpse of the 18th Cent., unburdened by hackneyed concerns for drama & character, :moreso it prioritizes visuals, movement, music, -because CINEMA- to display an existentialist development of one man's absurd pursuits for a quarter century of his life.

With a marvelous use of the camera, every single take of the movie becomes almost symmetrically perfect. Kubrick transforms this simple story into a great epic picture, that could be qualified as flawless

A masterpiece of film-making from one of the most masterful filmmakers of the 20th century, Barry Lyndon is a truly brilliant period piece. The emotion is captured authentically in every scene, the dynamics between all involved feel uncompromisingly realistic and powerful. The film, coming at at over 3 hours, never fails to be engrossing. This is due largely in part to the magnificent cinematography, just one technical aspect that was ahead of its time. The narrative is unique in that it features complex characters (Barry Lyndon is not your usual protagonist) and doesn't have events unfold in a traditional way, with a very methodical pace. That said, the story in Barry Lyndon is much more conventional than other Kubrick films, while maintaining the technical mystique of his more enigmatic works. The performances, the cinematography, the direction, and the poignant themes all combine to make Barry Lyndon a must see for all cinema fans, especially those with an appreciation of Kubrick. 5/5 Stars

Kubrick was one of the few filmmakers out there that stunned us not with explosions or with how shaky the camera was, but with how fluid the shots were and how breathtaking each frame was. Barry Lyndon is, at least in my opinion, his best shot film. Emphasized with natural lighting, partly due to the NASA f.7 lens, and a very interesting story that does something a lot of films don't: takes its time.
