Pieces of April (2003)

Quirky and rebellious April Burns lives with her boyfriend in a low-rent New York City apartment miles away from her emotionally distant family. But when she discovers that her mother has a fatal form of breast cancer, she invites the clan to her place for Thanksgiving. While her father struggles to drive her family into the city, April -- an inexperienced cook -- runs into kitchen trouble and must ask a neighbor for help.

a low budget film, but it's amazing and I LOVE it

A humorous drama with wonderful acting and directing. Watched it over and over again.

I just re-watched this over Thanksgiving and was pleasantly reminded of the greatness of this film. Peter Hedges, who wrote What's Eating Gilbert Grape, once again gives us fully realized, flawed, human characters. Katie Holmes gives her a great performance, but it's Patricia Clarkson's portrayal of Joy, that will help make this movie stand the test of time. Her cold-hearted exterior is merely a device to hide the hurt and loss she feels for April.

An all-time fave that reaches home. A daughter and her issues with her family, particularly with her very critical mom. A very sweet and humorous film.
