Pieces of April (2003)

Quirky and rebellious April Burns lives with her boyfriend in a low-rent New York City apartment miles away from her emotionally distant family. But when she discovers that her mother has a fatal form of breast cancer, she invites the clan to her place for Thanksgiving. While her father struggles to drive her family into the city, April -- an inexperienced cook -- runs into kitchen trouble and must ask a neighbor for help.

80 minutes of honest, heartfelt perfection. I could watch this over once for every single character and still not tire of it, I cry almost from the first shot of Joy in the garage through to the beautiful freeze frames at the end.

I thought it was ok the first time I saw it, but after a second viewing I found it much more enthralling and moving. The cinematography is just gorgeous and the main characters have depth and complex that adds to this amazing story.

Before Katie Holmes joined scientology, she made this underappreciated gem. Yeah, it's indie, so you have to be into that. If you are tho, this is a must-see. Great acting, great story.

loved it! it's real, deals with real issues and the characters could be anyone you know. if you've ever been the black sheep, the over achiever, the one who's always trying to get everyone to make amends or just an innocent bystander, this movie will hit you hard. i know, who would have exoected it from katie holmes? j/j, she's really great in this.
