Autumn Sonata (1978)

After a seven-year absence, Charlotte Andergast travels to Sweden to reunite with her daughter Eva. The pair have a troubled relationship: Charlotte sacrificed the responsibilities of motherhood for a career as a classical pianist. Over an emotional night, the pair reopen the wounds of the past. Charlotte gets another shock when she finds out that her mentally impaired daughter, Helena, is out of the asylum and living with Eva.

[Bergman's] self conscious, immensely grave direction suggests some statement about the meaning of life and all that. It is all exquisitely tedious.

has a steady, accumulating power, and while it ranks high among Bergman's dramas, it is not quite a masterpiece, at least not on the level of Cries and Whispers (1972) and Scenes From a Marriage (1973), his signature films of the period.

Il y a peu à dire après le visionnement d'un pareil chef-d'oeuvre. Bergman fait une fois de plus la preuve de l'incroyable perfection de sa technique, de la profondeur de son écriture et de sa capacité à s'entourer de gens tout aussi talentueux que lui. L'habileté de la direction photographique de Sven Nykvist est prodigieuse. Chaque petite nuance de couleur ou d'éclairage semble ajouter à la scène. Liv Ulmann livre quant à elle une performance qui à elle seule lui assurerait une place de choix au panthéon des meilleurs actrices. Je me suis surpris à retenir mon souffle durant le long monologue de Ulmann à sa mère, jouée par la célèbre Ingrid Bergman. Un excellent film et une des oeuvres majeures de Bergman.

A rather somber film that I thought was too heavily focused on monologues. Even with that in mind, this was an emotionally intense film that I certainly enjoyed watching. I'm not sure if the mother or daughter was supposed to be the more sympathetic character (or perhaps both), but I certainly cared much more for the mother (not unlike my feelings in Terms of Endearment, except in that instance I actively hated the daughter). I can understand where the daughter was coming from but her lack of forgiveness for her mother when she (the daughter) has displayed similar (albeit more passive aggressive and self-pitying) behaviors towards her husband. On that note, I liked how one could see how the mother's upbringing influenced her life, personality, and her own relationship with her daughter. Very well acted, directed, and the mother's and daughter's characters were fleshed out nicely (it helps that 90% of the film was the two of them talking to each other).
