Tokyo Sonata was the excellent blackest of black comedies, in the vein of Miike's Vistor Q and Todd Solondz Happiness, throw in some Lynch, Bergman, Haneke and Polanski moments and u got a very entertaining film. It loses a little steam towards the end and some moments don't go as extreme as some of the filmmakers i've mentioned are known for, but it is still an incredibly beautiful film by a true modern master.

Kurosawa drops the avantgarde poses of his earlier non-horror outings for this surprisingly straight but equally dark tale of modern Japan. With Tokyo Sonata Kurosawa creates the perfect vehicle for discussing blind reliance on authority and the importance of informal collective judgement in Japanese culture without having to resort to tricks of genre. The shadow-existence of the unemployed Kagawa Teruyuki is in essence as horrific as that of the eternally lonely ghosts in the epochal scare-fest Kairo. However, for once here's a Kurosawa feature with a little bit of hope left in the end.

Un très beau portrait d'une famille japonaise emporter dans la tourmente d'une crise économique, sociale et politique. Le film est inégale, mais 4 étoiles quand même car 24H apres j'y pense encore.

Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa cut his teeth on horror movies, and his flattened, formal style mines the horror in everyday urban life.

No, it doesn't turn into another horror film or a murder-suicide. It simply shows how lives torn apart by financial emergencies can be revealed as being damaged all along.
