This is a remarkable movie which perfectly captures the way we modern types are caught up in systems which have no interest in us and would really prefer that we just bow out. It's hard to dislike any of the characters in this movie and you get a sense that Kurosawa really cares for them. Great film

Brilliant! Kurosawa sets up his film as a somewhat typical family drama, with a lot of tension about an unhappy family becoming even unhappier, then... well it becomes a Kurosawa film. It seems that this is an expansion of his previous film, Doppelganger, which plays with conventions in a way that may leave some audience scratching their noggins, but to others it's absolutely thrilling. And it's not like Tarrintino, throwing vampires into a gangster film (not bad mouthing From Dusk til Dawn. Great film), but a lot more organic. Just not predictable. I've always dug Kurosawa, though I worry about his determination not to be pigeonholed as a horror director. I feared this was going to be his For Love of the Game, where he casually spits on his previous work and makes something much more palatable. Not to worry. This is pure Kiyoshi all the way. It also reminds me of 2 other of my favourite Japanese family dramas, Miike's awesome Visitor Q an Happiness of the Katakuris. Highly recommended.

A simple yet powerful story. Subtle and amazingly directed. Few movies leave you so overwhelmed at the end.

Japanese always has a way to capture the texture of the reality of the ordinary family life and the subtle delicacy of human interaction. I love the first half of the movie in which the characters are slowly sucked into the downward spiral of life. The real-time editing has given the movie a natural grace, just like a lot of the Asian cinema. The scene in which everybody's waiting for the father to finish his beer and start to eat is simply breath-taking. Tho I don't really like the ending but the ending shot with the parents walking their child out of the frame silently is OMG-ly stunning.
