Anonymous (2011)

Set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her, the story advances the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare's plays.

As long as you're willing to view this as a work of entertainment and not as a conspiracy theory then I would find it hard not to enjoy, for it is a wonderfully creative movie with fine performances and a riveting story.

Literary scholars and fans of Shakespeare are treating this like their Da Vinci Code and the very thought of this movie gets their blood boiling. I don't pretend to be a Shakespearian expert on the matter nor am I going to shut my imagination off to the endlessly fascinating conspiracy theories that drive this story; what I do know, though, is that piece of historical fiction is exceedingly entertaining and kept my attention all the way through. Forget the conspiracy for whether or not Shakespeare created those works and lets find out who really directed this movie, because being good isn't Roland Emmerich's strong point. But seriously I found this movie fascinating and story totally sold me on what it intended to do. Rhyd Ifans gives an incredible performance and the script by John Orloff was clever without becoming self indulgent or pretentious and the directing by *bites lip* Roland Emmerich was great.

I'm sorry, but I LOVED this film. They took a concept and ran with it, turned it into something totally genius. So sad this got such horrible reviews. It's one of my favorite films.

For anyone who has delved into the controversy surrounding Shakespeare authorship, this movie brings that drama about the drama to life. Superbly filmed, wonderfully acted in particular Redgrave, Hogg, Armesto, Ifans. I fear a general audience will not understand how much of this is historically accurate. The critics have not done their homework. But the real message of the film is about the walls in front of human creativity, before which and behind which there is pain on the way to perfection. Congrats to Emmerich on crossing over into the historical "Fach", and Orloff's weaving of the web of de Verean biography. Have already watched it thrice. Highly to be recommended.
