Anna is haunting. A lot to think about. Easily enters your dreams because of Joe Wright's theater sequences that puts me more in the frame of mind that I'm studying a psychomachia and that Tolstoy is never far from conscious. The play is the the thing to catch the conscience of a king...Keira Knightly is my celebrity crush. I would throw myself on the track to stop her train from arriving. Really Haunting movie.

The film’s intentionally theatrical nature describes the publicly view-able nature of the Russian aristocracy, plainly illustrating the social implications of Anna’s affair. And like Tolstoy’s masterpiece, it gracefully shifts between the many scenes in the complex narrative. But the stylized production does not detract from the precise yet emotional performances by Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen and others.

Ignore the illiterate movie summaries and reviews by people who have never read the book. This is a beautiful and, more important, faithful retelling of Tolstoy's classic. It is not a detailed retelling, which would take hours and hours, but tells the soul of the story in an original and enlightened way. Tolstoy wanted the reader to pity Anna, not admire her. Anna was not in love with anyone but herself. The true love story, which this move does not forget, is between Levin and Kitty. And it comes across beautifully.

exquisitely creative, original, and beautiful
