Another film that attempts to capture the COVID experience at the beginning of the lockdowns ends up being a story that desperately seeks direction and meaning after the first act has passed. The structure is clear and consequently predictable, especially given how little it can afford to vary and how little it intends to do so. Katie Holmes knows her game as an actress, but as a director and writer she has a long way to go. The idea of Alone Together implies how much you will invest in the characters and their circumstances, but when these are so inconsistent, uncertain and unrealistic, the response really won't be positive and in my case all I can really say is that it was a dull misfire.

Tenderly-conceived, tastefully-directed, handsomely-mounted and prestigiously-cast, its a drama that runs up against the wall of over-familiarity and the ceiling of expectations. Even without being the umpteenth version of this sort of film to come out, it’s pretty bland going.

Luke and the other actors do their best, especially Zosia Mamet as June’s friend and Melissa Leo as Charlie’s mother, but the dialogue never creates vivid, specific, consistent characters.

With so many people and life going back to some semblance of normalcy, Alone Together may feel slightly too late, but Holmes' film offers something worth engaging with.

The only way this play at “bringing a sense of joy and optimism during a time of great fear and loss” (as she states in her brief, platitude-heavy, 68-word director’s statement) could be more tone-deaf is if she waited to reveal it was set during the first few weeks of the pandemic in 2020 for a third-act rug pull.
