Each of her previous movies captures human collapse in slow motion. You Were Never Really Here is a breakdown shot in hyperdrive, lean, economic, utterly ruthless and made with fiery craftsmanship. Let this be the language we use to characterize her reputation as one of the best filmmakers working today.

A genuinely disturbing look at the mental state of someone with severe Ptsd, You were never really here succeeds as a character study of a man struggling to cope.

Lynne Ramsay is a treasure and one of the greatest filmmakers alive. This film is like landmine that will implant itself in your brain and haunt you days after it's seen. Joaquin Phoenix is extraordinary and I hope they combine for 10+ more projects together. The score by Jonny Greenwood further establishes him as the supreme genius within the role of film composer

[T]he sheer power of artistic skill on the screen is striking and demands attention... This is what we mean when we say we want films that make us feel, and it's something [director Lynne] Ramsay has done consistently through her entire career.

Pulls the rug out from under the hyper-masculine action genre.
