Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013)

Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, an impassioned young outlaw couple on an extended crime spree, are finally apprehended by lawmen after a shootout in the Texas hills. Although Ruth wounds a local officer, Bob takes the blame. But four years later, Bob escapes from prison and sets out to find Ruth and their daughter, born during his incarceration.

A thin, molasses-slow story that appears to highlight director Lowery as the next Terrence Malick.

87% Ain't Them Bodies Saints is this years brilliant and beautifully shot example of a character driven story at it's best, for a supporting role, Keith Carradine was this film's icing on top. But for the main actors here, Casey Affleck is at the top of his game, Ben Foster gives yet again another spectacularly subtle performance, and Rooney Mara shows off her acting chops once again, expressing how committed and serious of an actress she can really be. Not to mention the cinematography here is a visually resplendent galore to behold. Extremely excited to see what director Lowery does next. From what I hear, he is teaming up again with Affleck in a Sci Fi tale involving time travel from a collection of novellas called "Into the Silent Land", consisting of other stories about case studies of neuropsychology as well. Overall, one of the best art house sleepers this year, and a well rounded homage to classic outlaw couple films like Bonnie and Clyde and Badlands.

Beautiful to a fault, David Lowery's Ain't them Bodies Saints is a visually stunning romance that doesn't rely too heavily on narrative and would rather show us what the characters are feeling. And in a way this approach works for this film as we are given beautiful dialogue against gorgeous images of land and the doomed couple talking of life and what they hope they can become together. The performances are exceptional especially from Casey Affleck who does a fine job of displaying the love and determination he has towards being reunited with his wife and the daughter he's never met. Rooney Mara does well as the grieving lover, but it's most certainly not as remembering as Affleck's. Lowery's film does suffer from a few faults, but rises above them with crisp cinematography and a sense of beauty that most films of today can't seem to grasp. It's a stunning debut film and Lowery is a talent I will keeping an eye out for.

more Thieves Like Us than Malick as critics are saying, but this is a good thing. this is a tender, beautiful story of a couple of very lost souls who could have each other if things like crime didn't get in the way. it seems like a corny point too but what is so great about Lowrys work is that the story and mood emphasizes how love should be what matters, care and compassion, in the midst of violence and this is a powerful point to make from an American film when Hollywood churns out so many violent spectacles. it's almost TOO fragile in a way, like Casey Afflecks voice which still cracks even as he's now in his 30s. the performances are sublime, especially Rooney Mara who is quickly becoming one of the most quietly exciting actresses working.
