Wealthy rancher Bick Benedict and dirt-poor cowboy Jett Rink both woo Leslie Lynnton, a beautiful young woman from Maryland who is new to Texas. She marries Benedict, but she is shocked by the racial bigotry of the White Texans against the local people of Mexican descent. Rink discovers oil on a small plot of land, and while he uses his vast, new wealth to buy all the land surrounding the Benedict ranch, the Benedict's disagreement over prejudice fuels conflict that runs across generations.

The best movie about Texas ever made (thus making it one of the best movies ever made).

This is a great movie-good story, love stories, and it is just absolutely gorgeous to see not only the incredibly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, but the color and cinematography are dynamite. All this and James Dean too!

This is a classic "Texas" movie. It's very cheesey, but that's part of the charm. It's also about 3 hours long. So grab a beverage. This came out when my parents were dating and they always smile at each other when this movie is mentioned, so I imagine they have some good memories attached to it. A-hem. Which makes me smile. When Caleb first saw this, it totally turned him into a little cowboy for about 3 years. We moved to Texas shortly after he saw it for the first time. He was addicted to this movie. :)

Absolutely a perfect film and my favorite performances from Liz, Rock and James. Also loved that Sal Mineo and Dennis Hopper had smaller roles in the flick. I've never read the Edna Ferber book but at over 3 hours long, I have to assume that this is a pretty thorough adaptation. This is one of those rare films that despite its length, I can sit through for repeat viewings and never get tired of it. I'm a sucker for a period piece that spans generations!
