A Thousand Clowns (1965)

Twelve-year-old Nick lives with his Uncle Murray, a Mr.Micawber-like Dickensian character who keeps hoping something won't turn up. What turns up is a social worker, who falls in love with Murray and a bit in love with Nick. As the child welfare people try to force Murray to become a conventional man (as the price they demand for allowing him to keep Nick), the nephew, who until now has gloried in his Uncle's iconoclastic approach to life, tries to play mediator. But when he succeeds, he is alarmed by the uncle's willingness to cave in to society in order to save the relationship.

I am surprised that the critics reacted so negatively to this movie. To me this was a beautiful film that symbolized man's struggle between his individuality and desire to live free and the demands of a repressed society so bound up in its inhibitions that it chooses to exclude those who don't toe the line. Robards' inevitable surrender to the dictates of society reminds me of an iconoclastic Pilgrim's Progress. This was Jason Robards' part of his life..

It holds up extremely well, the acting is uniformly superb, the cinematography breathtaking, and the script genuinely funny and touching.

My favorite movie. The characters, the camera angles, the cuts, the music, the acting...it's unexpected and exquisite.

This is, without a doubt, the most underrated movie in the history of American cinema. It is a sweet, endearing story of a man who is forced to grow up and face the world which depresses him for the sake of his nephew.

What crap! Completely non-entertaining! Must have been a really bad year for actors if Martin Balsam won an Oscar for such an uninteresting role.Boring! Who would be interested in this?
