[i]The Spy Who Came in From the Cold[/i] is perhaps best of the Cold War spy movies. Good writing coupled with brilliant performances make it that rare film based on a novel that is equal of its predecessor. The uncompromising complexity of its story requires some effort on part of the viewer but staying engaged in this great picture is well worth the effort.

A little slow to start with but comes together beautifully in the the last third. Burton's gritty performance is quality. A more realistic and darker alternative to the Bond franchise.

a cold war thriller that is curiously lacking in tension and thrills, yet still remains intriguing due to the story, and a well cast burton. fantastic black and white cinematography, and enjoyed the amoral aspect of the overall theme.

At a time when Sean Connery was popular as James Bond, Richard Burton was a different kind of spy as Alec Leamas in "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", based on John le Carré's novel. The film has a darker atmosphere in contrast to Bond films, aided by Sol Kaplan's appropriate score. Richard Burton is perfect and memorable as the jaded spy Alec Leamas. Claire Bloom also has a good turn as Nan Perry and Oskar Werner is notable as Fiedler. The supporting cast is equally as solid. Those looking for a spy thriller with a high amount of action scenes will be sorely disappointed. This film builds up a thoughtful Cold War spy story over time and opts for characterization and intrigue over action scenes, which may lead some viewers to find it slow-paced. However, I was very satisfied with the plot developments and clever resolution of the film's intrigue. Some people may find the film's final moments unwelcome, but I thought it fit with the tone of the film.

Good movie. Gets kind of boring though, there are some pretty pointless parts. A great ending though. And it holds a fucking world record for plot twists.
