An excellent contemporary espionage drama of the Cold War which achieves solid impact via emphasis on human values, total absence of mechanical spy gimmickry, and perfectly controlled underplaying.

Excellent, almost faultless adaptation. Werner and Burton are made for the roles of Fiedler and Burton. Keeps up an atmosphere of chilly hell throughout the film.

I was, in fact, not expecting this. Burton is one of my top actors, but his uneven CV has thought me that; expect nothing. I did, and what a treat this is. They do indeed not make movies like this these days!

Probably the best spy/suspense movie ever made. Richard Burton is amazing as Alec Leamas, and the rest of the cast really makes this a fascinating spy film. The use of black and white versus color was a great touch, and helped to really heighten the bleak atmosphere.
