'The Apple' is the stupendous story of two isolated Iranian girls. The plot is thin, but concentrates on the day-to-day life of these two children as they manage to find a place for themselves in modern-day Iran. This film transcends any cheap statement about religion and culture. Images that will stay with you are those of their saddening father, and their mute and blind mother. A sensational film.

Samira Makhmalbaf was only 17 when she made this impressive exposé of this revolting real story and of the blatant gender inequality in Iran - and it is really shocking to see that those girls were sent home by a social worker after being discovered in such deplorable conditions.
