Using a dialogue-heavy approach that's unusual for Cronenberg, his film is skilled at the way it weaves theory with the inner lives of its characters. We are learning, yet never feel we're being taught.

A deeply unsettling performance by Knightley, buoyed by Fassbender's and Mortensen's brilliant portayals makes A Dangerous Method an engaging piece of historical fiction about psychoanalysis.

Keira Knightley is a tour de force in this otherwise slow moving movie. Fassbender is a bit turgid and Mortensen is almost comatose, only the amount of unsmoked cigar says otherwise. If Knightley, whose acting is ten orders of magnitude above the rest of the cast, was not in this movie it would be easy to give it a miss. However see it for her performance alone!

www.unsungfilms.com by Georgia Xanthopoulou Based on a stage play which was based, in its turn, on a book by John Kerr, A Dangerous Method is about the relationship a young Carl Jung develops with a troubled patient as well as the beginning and break-up of his friendship with Sigmund Freud. Most importantly, the film concerns itself with the events that probably caused the breakdown he suffered during World War I and the battle within himself as his values as a responsible physician clashed with his carnal desires. The film starts off quite rough. For those who may be frightened by the beginning of the film, I assure you it gets better.

While its highly sexual subject matter may deter some audience members from going the distance, at its core A Dangerous Method is a sincere and dedicated look at two of psychology's most influential figures. Knightley, Fassbender, and Mortensen are all in complete command of their roles; the natural chemistry between the three of them is by far the film's greatest strength. David Cronenberg could have reduced this narrative to one of erotic drama, but he instead invests much of the film's 100 minute length in the intricacies of mental medicine and the very evolution of psychosis. Regardless of enjoyment, this is one that will stay with you.
