In 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields is a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women – Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields' home and Julie, a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour – to help with Jamie's upbringing.

The fact this was ignored by the oscars I can only attribute to poor marketing and the fact it deals w women's issues in a raw beautiful but unairbrushingly refreshing way. I will concede that about 15 minutes of editing would have done this film a service but its stellar acting, brilliant script and maestro like directing should have assured this film be included in all award contention. It is actually one of the most important movies of the decade.

A beautiful and masterfully-directed ode to the many women in our lives. Filled with wise aphorisms and witty repartee, 20th Century Women is essential watch for the intellect who loves his/her films intelligently-scripted and compellingly-acted. This is clearly thespian Annette Bening's showboating moment and she clearly milks the role for what it's worth. She's at the peak of her craft and it's a crying shame she isn't nominated for the Oscars. Indie darlings Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig are also utterly terrific. This is director Mike Mills' finest hour.

Despite the gender gap between the film’s creator and his subjects, the film is beautifully perceptive and, at times, deeply poignant. Mills has created the kind of comedy in which you laugh with recognition because its dilemmas feel so familiar.

Despite a number of fine performances and a handful of well-written, memorable moments, the overall production meanders in search of the glue it needs to pull everything together. The result is either a finished product that's entirely too "inside" to be meaningful to anyone beyond its creator or a gimmicky exercise in contrivance that's a little too intentionally quirky for its own good. The rudiments of a good film are here, but, unfortunately, they never coalesce into a satisfying whole.
