While it is not by any means a bad film, it is simplistic and awash with sentimentality and misplaced humour. These elements haven't dated well, and seem cloying and jarring. Watch it for Henry Fonda's performance.

interesting from a historical perspective, if it's not quite the masterpiece some adherents have made it out to be

Hitchcock was once asked to name his three favorite directors. He responded with John Ford, John Ford, and John Ford. And one of John Ford's favorite actors was Henry Fonda. This film is a great collaboration between the two. Fords films are both simple and yet epic. Fonda has the ability to beautifully portray a character with out overstating any role. Fonda's portrayal of Lincoln is inspiring. The makeup is amazing. He looks more like Lincoln and is almost unrecognizable as Fonda.

Henry Fonda does an amazing job in portraying Lincoln in the years that led up to his presidency. Its a humanistic look at a mans journey and struggles. What a true treat and certainly one of those films that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

Henry Fonda's portrayal of Lincoln is legendary, greatly aided by makeup, one feels the presence of Lincoln immediately upon seeing him. You can feel the breath of Lincoln all over this film, only slightly marred by it being a work of fiction. Still, one can easily visualize Lincoln behaving exactly this way had he been placed in this situation. The story is jaw-dropping good and will invariably force one to backtrack and watch a certain scene all over again.
