En av tidenes beste krigsfilmer. Akira Kurosawa var ogsaa maler. Han malte alle scenene i filmen paa store lerett istedet for aa tegne smaa "storyboards" som andre filmskapere gjÃ¸r. Noe han brukte over 10 aar paa. Og det syns i filmen. Du kan bokstavelig talt "pause" filmen naar som helst og du ser paa et kunstverk som er fint nok til aa henge paa veggen.

Let's put it this way. Shakespeare was history's greatest playwright. Lear was his greatest play. Kurosawa improved upon it. Nuff said.

Kurosawa has influenced so many of our greats - Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola - RAN represents the pinnacle of his movie making magic adapting the King Lear story to feudal Japan. Tatsuya Nakadai (remember him as the gunslinging thug in Yojimbo) is simply commanding and tragic as the old war lord. Kurosawa's direction of battle scenes i.e. no sound is truly breathtaking.

Simply breathtaking, Kurosawa's perfect "Ran" is a brilliant retelling of Shakespeare's "King Lear" with gorgeous scenery, exquisite acting from lead Tatsuya Nakadai, and colors that reflect the emotional mood of the film. The scene that hits me in the gut the most is the mad Emperor's castle being raided. As he slowly descends down the steps, his entire world falls apart in roaring flames and dying soldiers. No sound of screaming troops or the thumping of hooves. Just haunting music. It truly is "ran"--the Japanese word for chaos.
