Rawang, an immigrant from Bangladesh living in awful conditions, takes pity on a Chinese man, Hsiao-kang, who is beaten up and left in the street. Rawang lovingly nurses him on a mattress he found. When he is almost healed, Hsiao-kang meets the waitress Chyi. His love for Rawang is put to the test.

Amidst the Spiderman3 sound effects blarin from the next cineplex hall, Tsai Ming Liang told us "Tell your friends to come and watch my film". Minimalist in the vein of Kieslowski, indulgent with the Tarkovsky long takes, he doesn't command attention -he invites it.

Once you watched all Tsai's previous works, for some scenes in this film you may sense that Tsai has reached to a new level this time. It is more abstract in that scenes yet meanwhile it is also very clear.

Tsai Ming-Liang proved that you can make a good film without any music/soundtrack or dialogue. The cast hardly talked, just sequences of events unfolding. Kuala Lumpur never looked so haunting (artistically, not the spiritually kind!) before. It's kind of strange, though to find so many familiar locations in the film. The pace could be slow for some, but I find it ok. Pearlly Chua and newcomer Norman really shined here. Definitely one of Tsai's more 'understandable' films. Unfortunately I watched it in a cinema with parents who brought their restless kids. :( Some scenes were also snipped by the censorship board as the authorities were worried that a glimpse of Lee Kang-Sheng's ass would send Malaysian audience into a raping frenzy and scenes of a foggy Putrajaya would deter foreign tourists (and not rampant logging of our virgin forests) and thus, hurt our tourism industry.

Tsai's alter-ego Lee Kang Sheng performs two roles here: That of a paralyzed man and his double who roams the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Atmospheric dystopian view succeeds on many levels.
