I suppose most would hesitate to call it the late master's greatest, but thanks to Ingrid Thulin's performance it's my favorite.

a film that plays like a note perfect baroque cello suite - as dazzlling and absorbing as it is grey in tone, Winter Light lingers on in the mind long after its brief symbolic duration from noon till three

My favorite of the Trilogy. Truffaut said it best in categorizing Bergman as an outsider. It is true, and as I watch more of Bergman's pictures, he really was in a world of his own. We obviously see that faith is questioned by this pastor, but we also see a relationship between two people slowly and brutally unravel. With probably one of the most impacting scenes I've seen in a while, or for that matter ever, Marta attacks Tomas, and Bergman holds a static shot for just about six minutes. I was captured, and felt fully involved with this woman and this story.

Bergman's great realist masterpiece is possibly his hardest film to watch, and with good reason. Bergman uses a condensed time setting to examine an extraordinary day in an ordinary life. Every line sounds like real speech, every shot is deliberately subtle. The film manages to be at once stripped of artifice and deeply symbolic. Bergman considered it one of his three best films. If he had only made three great films, this would probably be one of them, but thankfully, he made many.
