Wonderfully bleak. To me, every dialogue, every sentence, every word resonated powerfully and provoked thought. Bergman is exceptional in conveying the inner pains of his characters, and I have come to admire him since he has the balls to make highly personal films. I rarely rate 5 stars to films and I do only when the film leaves a deep impression on me. Might be the present phase in my life but I identified at a certain level with this film, this is why Winter Light goes directly to my top 10 list.

this film made ingmar bergman one of my heroes. i had never seen someone attack religion so overtly.

A concise, visually poetic and intellectual exploration of faith. It's one of Bergman's best films.

Bergman is a master at getting under your skin and pulling apart layers of your brain. What "Winter Light" does in 80 minutes is really quite unforgettable. Every question the Pastor in crisis faces is not only something the character attempts to decipher, but as a viewer you're trying to figure out your own position in a world riddled with questions concerning religion. Does the world revolve around coincidence's when it comes down to answered prayers? Or is it truly God that notices your amount of anguish and rewards you with making the situation better?

A pastor loses all meaning to life in the face of what he interprets as God's silence. Unable to love, finding no passion in life, he finds his life empty. A very profound film.
