Humble and introvert Muharrem lives in a solitary and meager existence of a prayer and sexual abstinence adhering strictly to the most severe Islamic doctrines.His extraordinary devotion attracts the attention of the leader of a rich and powerful Istanbul religious group and he offers him an administrative post as a rent collector for their numerous properties. Muharrem's new job throws him into the modern outside world he has successfully avoided for so long. He soon witnesses conflict attitude toward alcohol consumption and goodwill.He notices that he himself has become proud, domineering and even dishonest.To make matters worse, Muharrem's inner peace is unnerved by the tormenting image of seductive woman who tempts him in his dreams,both night and day.With the balance of his devotion now upset,his fear of God begins to eat away at his senses.

A classic tale of how the "evil" hunts down the good...A tale of a simple good Beliver who is challenged in his beliefs by the pittfalls of the modern business world. A look in to the microworld of Muharrem is an important subject of todays world, where the good the obedient are more more challenged in their faith. The hipocrisy of man and the duality of the imams, the hypocritical world can just confuse and throw a good man in madness. So there is a subtle criticism of the religous movements in islam as well the their patronages. The things I didn't like was a quite harsh falldown from the good and bad, because the intro about the simple life of Muharrem was a bit too long and the change was a little bit overrushed...The second thing I didn't like was the involvement of the UCK in the story, because there was no connection with the story and it seemed a little bit more like marketing rather then integral part of the movie. Nevertheless an important movie for everybody who needs insight in their faith.

What might be interpreted as the story of a hypocritical religious institution coldly ruining the life of a simple devout man is something else entirely. The energy of the worship scenes alone makes it worthwhile.

First hour....brilliant. The process of Muharrem's transformation from a devote muslim into a sinner could have been better conveyed, this process seems to happen without a specific reason.

I found it too depressing (sorry if my ex-boyfriend, the cinematographer, is reading) especially when religious issues are already quite hot and scary in my country these days.
