Masculin Féminin (1966)

Paul, a young idealist trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life, takes a job interviewing people for a marketing research firm. He moves in with aspiring pop singer Madeleine. Paul, however, is disillusioned by the growing commercialism in society, while Madeleine just wants to be successful. The story is told in a series of 15 unrelated vignettes.

Probably my favorite Godard film I've seen thus far. Romantic, political, clever, funny, unconventional, this one's got it all.

Not my favourite Godard offering but from his earlier work in the Nouvelle Vague period, which is the best part of his career in my opinion. Yeah - you could call it pretentious but it's Godard!

Featuring one of Jean-Pierre Léaud's finest performances and the delightful Catherine Duport, this must count as one of Godard's most enjoyable movies and certainly one of his best. Essay format... interviews, philosophical remarks, 'shocking' revelations. Fabulous structure.

Probably why I loved the movie so was because I could identify closely with Paul - a hopeless romantic clinging on to an utopian ideology rejected by most.

A troubled and alienated love story between a young man who fancies himself an intellectual and a revolutionary and a young woman who dreams of becoming a successful pop star is the subject for a film which represents a high point in the incendiary and influential film movement known as the French New Wave by one of its most acknowledged exponents, Jean-Luc Godard. Shot right out in t he street, this is a testament of its fast moving times, as well as a seemingly hopeless research for tenderness among the fierce and never ending battle of the sexes in a disenchanted youth culture. Godard does so in a structure which divides the film into fifteen different episodes, filled with creativity, and starring two major iconic stars, one an icon of cinema of the time, Jean Pierre Léaud, and the other French pop star Chantal Goya.
