Wild Strawberries (1957)

Crotchety retired doctor Isak Borg travels from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne, in order to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater. Along the way, they encounter a series of hitchhikers, each of whom causes the elderly doctor to muse upon the pleasures and failures of his own life. These include the vivacious young Sara, a dead ringer for the doctor's own first love.

A very deep and reflective film. Very well made.

I had my heart in my mouth the whole time I saw this. I found it intensely emotional and so tense in places. Absolutely loved it.

I could not say anything bad about this film whatsoever. This may be a very accessible film done by Ingmar Bergman because of his use of realism, other than THE SEVENTH SEAL from the same year.

An aged professor's long journey inward, exploring where he is from through his underlying consciousness -- exploring themes we all should consider more often.

In some ways, this movie almost could be the Swedish "It's a wonderful life," or perhaps the opposite of it. But what it does share in common in this type of movie is a story of a man who realizes who he is, where he's come from, and where he should go. In some ways, I find this tale and its telling so refreshing, maybe more so than the Capra movie, because I find the latter a bit on the cloyingly sweet side, despite it's classic appeal. Not that I don't like "It's a wonderful life," but I find the verismo aspect of the Bergman piece more appealing. The characters as portrayed by Sjostrom, Andersson, Thulin, among others, provide a bas relief look at one man's experience in this most Scandinavian telling. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an appealing title on a human drama.
