Lovely portrayal of desire and resentment not only for loved ones but also for one's self. Beautifully captured in the natural locations which are the benchmark of Italian Neorealist movies. Th ending is almost a warning to anybody attempting such a feat. However if you have nothing to lose!

Not my favourite by Visconti, but still a classic of Italian cinema and the best adaptation of the Postman Always Rings Twice that you're likely to see.

I'm always reluctant about Italian neo-realism because I always expect a big, long misery-fest about how hard life is but this had a bit more to it. Based on The Postman Always Rings Twice, this follows a drifter as he gets tangled up with a married woman who persuades him to kill her husband but of course it doesn't run so smoothly. It drags a bit in places but it's generally a pretty good film noir with some great photography

vastly superior to the 1981remake...and for my money more entertaining than the turner/ garfield version ( which is also very good). loved visconti's placing of the action in predominantly rural settings...also, the three leads are perfect in their roles. amazing to think this almost could have been a lost film. highly recommended.....

A very good film, really one where you start seeing the neorealismo that would come full blown later on. IT's not a brilliant film, but the style and the camera are all so well handled that you're just tempted to watch other Visconti films now. The entire focus on being bleak and every shot is filled with despair. A fine film.
