Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)

Based on the long running play by Jang Jin, the story is set in Korea during the Korean War in 1950. Soldiers from both the North and South, as well as an American pilot, find themselves in a secluded and naively idealistic village, its residents unaware of the outside world, including the war.

It is a crazy, imaginative movie which points out the ridiculousness of warfare by funs and jokes. In particular I like the scene where the soliders of both sides pointing guns to each other but in the middle of them the villagers were gradually all gone - what the hell the soldiers are doing!? - what are they in fact fighting for and against? Anyway, whether wars are aimless or not, the movie reflects the reality that wars always have sad endings. By the way, it should be noted that this movie has never been brought to HK's cinemas - please see what HK people need

Brilliant film set during the Korean war. North and South Korean soliders plus an American end up in a small village with interesting results. A classic.

One of the best films of 2005! A great concept executed extremely well. Three North, and two South Korean solders. As well as an American solder, through their own set of circumstances end up lost and wind up in a small mountain Village. This town is completely unaware of the conflict happening outside their community and are almost oblivious to violence whatsoever. Almost killing each other at first, and destroying the towns food supply, our 6 soldiers eventually learn to co-exist as they work together to help the town they almost destroyed.

Easily one of the best, most unique movies made about the Korean war for two reasons. First it shares a Korean perspective of the absurdity of this civil war with neither side certain who invaded whom or why. As one elder in the far-removed Shangri-La-type village of Dongmakgol puts it when he hears that a war is afoot, "Who's invaded this time? The Chinese? The Japanese?" and the answer of course is "er... it's not that simple." Secondly, it's not your typical war movie. This movie manages to be heartwarming, humorous and tragic, defying--as many Korean movies do--to be placed strictly within one genre.

Some parts are pretty serious and intense (war scenes), but the others are very entertaining and hilarious!
