Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)

Based on the long running play by Jang Jin, the story is set in Korea during the Korean War in 1950. Soldiers from both the North and South, as well as an American pilot, find themselves in a secluded and naively idealistic village, its residents unaware of the outside world, including the war.

This was a real pleasant surprise! I was expecting a full on war movie & got a beautiful character study. The only fault this movie had was a loss of focus midway, but this was reigned in neatly & works as a story of humanity over politics. It also thankfully doesnt have a hollywood happy ending it stays rooted in the believable & the emotional. Beautifully filmed, well acted & totally engaging.

It's a pretty good film. None of that North v. South hated against each other. Unfortunately, the movie is more like a fantasy than reality as my countrymen are stubborn as HELL.

It is a crazy, imaginative movie which points out the ridiculousness of warfare by funs and jokes. In particular I like the scene where the soliders of both sides pointing guns to each other but in the middle of them the villagers were gradually all gone - what the hell the soldiers are doing!? - what are they in fact fighting for and against? Anyway, whether wars are aimless or not, the movie reflects the reality that wars always have sad endings. By the way, it should be noted that this movie has never been brought to HK's cinemas - please see what HK people need
