Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)

Based on the long running play by Jang Jin, the story is set in Korea during the Korean War in 1950. Soldiers from both the North and South, as well as an American pilot, find themselves in a secluded and naively idealistic village, its residents unaware of the outside world, including the war.

Totally and utterly fantastic, It combines humour, pathos, Drama and mixed with top acting, top photography and top drama. If you are a patriotic American this film may not be to your taste, a very anti-war and very anti-aggression film which will melt your heart, always mesmerising and compelling to watch. Basically and without giving the story away, three opposing sides in the Korean war somehow come together in a mountainside village full of happy and content people who do not know what a gun is let alone have any aggression. The rest you will have to find out for yourselves, you really must see this gem of a film, you will not regret it or forget it, I promise! Ps....This somehow is classed as a comedy, while it is very funny in places, it is not a comedy, class it as a War/Drama/Comedy!

I haven't been this uplifted by a film since seeing Amelie for the first time. I was expecting something good but not this amazing. I've heard it described as a live action Studio Ghibli film and I think that captures the essence of this classic best. It is not only a fantastical journey of a film, but one with stunning visuals and expertly crafted scenes. The funny moments are absolutely hilarious and it mixes dark comedy with a much sweeter variety effortlessly. The scene with the boar is pure excitement and the sad scenes are tear jerking. Never failing to shift the mood with some consistency the film has a fantastic array of characters each played to perfection. Only the American cast let the film down as their acting styles seemed so forced. The political morals do not swamp the film and it is quite simply a delightful piece.

Beautifully shot film that flicks from gritty war to amusing naive humanity. As with most Korean films don't expect a hollywood ending!
