Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)

Based on the long running play by Jang Jin, the story is set in Korea during the Korean War in 1950. Soldiers from both the North and South, as well as an American pilot, find themselves in a secluded and naively idealistic village, its residents unaware of the outside world, including the war.

Funny and heartbreaking at the same time. A bold and unique movie.

A wonderful mixture of comedy as a means to dispel perilous tensions. Soldiers on both sides of the Korean divide stumble upon a hapless village oblivious to the war. Something very out of the ordinary occurs.

Part war film, part comedy Dongmakgol is a suprising, sweet, often surrel and affecting movie about the pointlessness of war. There's really nothing out there like it, seek it out.
