"Wake in Fright" se siente como una cinta de culto perdida. La pelicula pinta un retrato crudo y decadente de la vida en el desierto australiano y funge como una pesadilla para un maestro que pierde todo su dinero en unas apuestas. La cinta contiene un tono hipnotico y su locura se va anunciando sutilmente. Las actuaciones son muy buenas (en especial de Gary Bond y Donald Pleasence) y el director Ted Kotcheff crea escenas memorables (incluyendo una muy perturbadora de violencia grafica contra canguros que no fue simulada y resulta dificil de ver). "Wake in Fright" es una película australiana atmosferica y bizarra que vale mucho la pena descubrir.

John is a young teacher on his way to Sydney stops at Bundanyabba, a rough town in the Australian outback. It starts off innocently enough, but son John finds himself falling deeper and deeper in a depraved world where he ends up doing things in which he will never forget. Wake in Fright's visual design perfectly pulls you into this character's mind as he falls into a complete sense of degeneracy. The film has some amazing sequences with great use of editing sound. The scene where he goes "hunting" with his friends is visually stunning and emotionally destructive. Even though it wouldn't fit the classical description, I would call it a psychological horror film, and its easily one of the best of all time. Oh, and man, how do these guys not die of dehydration? They pretty much have a beer in their hand at all times of the day,in the middle of the desert! Its awesome. If you are a fan of Donald Pleasence, this is a performance you do not want to miss. A burning portrait of depravity in society, this is a fantastic film and possibly my favorite from Australia.

I find it fascinating that the same director that unleashed "Weekend at Bernie's" upon the world also gave us this masterpiece. Everything about this film is landmark...the sweeping cinematography, the crisp editing, the attention to detail is staggering. Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs" and Boorman's "Deliverance" share the same terrain of one man's descent into hell. Donald Pleasance's alcoholic, educated "Doc" is intoxicated fun as the films philosophical standpoint. Jack Thompson's first role and Chips Rafferty's last, this great film is enjoying a recent restoration and re-release after decades in limbo. A true classic given a well deserved welcome back!
