no special effects or big story lines that makes it stand out...but it tugged on my heart strings. :)

A fine cast and a fantastic story that has you laughing one minute and crying the next. Richard E. Grant's direction is captivating, with a level of verisimilitude captured by this first time director. A film to watch again and again.

This is a film that tried to be many things and in doing so, didn't really pull any of them off as powerfully as it could have done. There's elements of 'post-colonial narrative meets the bildingsroman'. Yet, the protagonist's coming of age in some ways becomes a sub-plot as the family's crises, highs and lows (centered around his father's alcoholism) are played out. There's some humour, as fun is poked at at the 'old English' sensibilities and etiquette - with a plethora of familiar actors enjoying this! Some fine photography, capturing the rugged, dry landscape. Quite intense, emotionally. Worth a look, but not a winner.
