Vera Cruz (1954)

After the American Civil War, mercenaries travel to Mexico to fight in their revolution for money. The former soldier and gentleman Benjamin Trane meets the gunman and killer Joe Erin and his men, and together they are hired by the Emperor Maximillian and the Marquis Henri de Labordere to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre to the harbor of Vera Cruz.

The character types and scenario are obvious key influences on the Eurowesterns to follow. But do not expect the same depth of traditional Catholic imagery, firsthand experience of revolutionary politics, or operatic coincidence of music and cinematography heightening the drama. This is primarily great on its own terms and in contrast to what preceded it, not solely in comparison to what it influenced.

WOW! Two great actors leading a terrifically plotted movie! Keep your eyes peeled for future "tough guy" Charles Bronson in one of his frst roles... This film was made in a time where Hollywood was very unfamiliar with the concepts of "grey" or "ambiguity". Lancaster is a complete bastard throughout the film... (and you just KNOW it won't end well for him)... but you can't help like the guy and root for his ultimate survival and success. Cooper does very well here too and it could be argued that this "morally ambiguous" 1954 AMERICAN film... actually paved the way for the successful "Spaghetti Westerns" that began to appear in the mid 60's... Nicely shot, well plotted western for fans of the genre...

When you pit two giants like Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster together in a film, you quickly see the scale of Lancaster`s charisma and character. Cooper on the other hand doesn't make much out of himself, he is sort of the quiet respectable type. But it is exactly these conflicting quality's that make this film so great. The contrast between the two is what makes "Vera Cruz" a conflict filled hilarity from beginning to end.

Nel 1866, nel ben mezzo dell'Impero di Massimiliano d'Asburgo, l'ex colonnello Ben Trane (Gary Cooper, lo Sceriffo Willy Kane di "Mezzogiorno di Fuoco") si unisce ad un gruppo di fuorilegge per scortare la contessa francese Duvarre fino al porto di Vera Cruz. Durante il viaggio Trane si accorgerà che nel fondo della carrozza in cui alloggia la donna vi è nascosto un tesoro (rubato ai messicani) che dev'essere apparentemente spedito in Europa. Quando però gli altri mercenari scopriranno il malloppo insorgeranno le conflittualità nello stesso gruppo di avventurieri. Trattasi di una delle opere più commerciali di Robert Aldrich, ancora distante dalle sue perizie registiche avvenire, ma già ben preparato nel dirigere adeguatamente le avvincenti messe in scena degli scontri a fuoco (spettacolari nella loro lavorazione manifatturiera) ed i piccoli intrecci sentimentali, grazie anche ad una fotografia probante ed acuminata. Non è "Sentieri Selvaggi" ma piacerà agli amanti del genere.

I like Gary Cooper. I like Burt Lancaster. I like Westerns. I like this movie. It's even got Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson as bad guys.
