Vera Cruz (1954)

After the American Civil War, mercenaries travel to Mexico to fight in their revolution for money. The former soldier and gentleman Benjamin Trane meets the gunman and killer Joe Erin and his men, and together they are hired by the Emperor Maximillian and the Marquis Henri de Labordere to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre to the harbor of Vera Cruz.

classic Hollywood adventure film by a honest director ...and a bright cast

Average western that makes it's mark due to strong performances by the two leads Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. Fun adventure with a dull plotline that is familiar with many comedy/westerns around this time period.

This may be the first Cooper movie I don't like. The director's decision to play Lancaster off as comic relief until the end when he becomes the villain just makes it seem like a waste of time.

My first Gary Cooper western and I see why he was the man before Wayne and Eastwood. Very dated plot and character writing however Burt Lancaster plays a great villain with the whitest teeth ever. The interplay between him and Cooper makes the movie.
