The opening scene shows an uber-enthusiastic Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) winning a lottery for $190,000. Cut to 6 years later, when she's exhausted all her money and been estranged from her family. This gives Riseborough an opportunity to go all out, creating an immensely flawed character with undeniable charm. As the character struggles to regain her past, her desperate performance takes on even more resonance. Marc Maron does nice job in his surprisingly out-of-character role. As a matter of fact, director Michael Morris has created an impressive ensemble crammed with effective performances. The overall drama unfolds slowly, but Riseborough's tender and beautifully observed performance makes it worth the time.

A standard film with a very good central performance. The screenplay is very basic and full of clichés. The romance subplot is not that convincing, but you gotta appreciate Marc Maron's try to make his character's motivations believable.

The director, Michael Morris, knows from the start what movie he’s making: one that robs us of our easy assumptions about who Leslie is. She’s unbearably flawed, and the screenwriter Ryan Binaco explains why without forcing long beats of exposition upon the viewer.

Ryan Binaco’s screenplay is full of tiny, keenly observed touches, but its greatest virtue is its attitude towards her addictions, the way it occupies her space with her, looking on passively but not judgmentally. It’s a movie that understands the desperation of alcoholism.

Riseborough’s impeccable performance cannot be overstated. Her passion shines consistently whether Leslie has hit her lowest low or is riding her highest high. All of this contributes to the film’s poetic ending, which is sure to leave you teary-eyed and reinvigorated with a new lease on life.
