The Wackiest Ship in the Army (1960)

Lieutenant Rip Crandall is hoodwinked into taking command of the "Wackiest Ship in the Navy" – a real garbage scow with a crew of misfits who don't know a jib from a jigger. What none of them knows, including Crandall, is that this ship has a very important top-secret mission to complete in waters patrolled by the Japanese fleet. Their mission will save hundreds of allied lives – if only they can get there in one piece.

Fun WWII comedy about Lemmon as the captain of a sailboat commissioned to indiscreetly spy on Japanese military movements. Ricky Nelson is his first mate and he, of course, gets to sing. Nothing brilliant, but it's a fun little film.

Not bad. It was on the telly this Saturday afternoon. Fairly light fare considering the title. It was refreshing to see such a young (swoon!) Jack Lemmon. The plot - or parts of the plot - reminded me of the one in 'Down Periscope' at least vaguely... or should it be the other way around? In any case things end happily ever after, as much as it can in the armed forces at least.

I did not find this movie funny at all, I swear they broke every rule in the Navy Book. Thus the *3* star rating.

This World War 2 service comedy is lightly entertaining, largely thanks to a good lead performance from Jack Lemmon, but suffers from a title and opening that sets up expectations for something much more outrageous than what we actually get. Much more adventure than comedy, the film concerns a Navy Officer played by Lemmon who is assigned command of a battered old ship for a top secret mission. The film has some gentle laughs and sympathetic characters and makes for diverting viewing but unless you're a fan of the genre or its two stars it is quite forgettable.
