The Turning (2013)
Seventeen talented Australian directors from diverse artistic disciplines each create a chapter of the hauntingly beautiful novel by multi award-winning author Tim Winton. The linking and overlapping stories explore the extraordinary turning points in ordinary people's lives in a stunning portrait of a small coastal community. As characters face second thoughts and regret, relationships irretrievably alter, resolves are made or broken, and lives change direction forever.

This nicely photographed series of 17 shorts based on Tim Winton's book is a real mess. If you haven't read the book, you will not know that certain characters reappear to different points in their lives which makes the whole thing impossible to follow as some sections seem entirely disposable. The producers presumably share this worry as they have provided a book which lists which characters come back but as it's a bit dark in the cinema it's not much help. So 17 directors, 17 casts, 17 snippets of just how grinding life in small town Australia (apparently it is all supposed to be set in one town) really is. Someone described it as melancholic, but I'd suggest grinding and dull would fit better. In case you wondered, the film with Cate Blanchett in looks like a first rehearsal for a stageplay it is so wooden. At one point I sweat the cast all looks at the direction for a clue about what is going on. If you like Winton's writing you'll want to see it, but there aren't many other reasons.

With each episode produced by its own individual creative team, the lack of continuity can disorientate. But it's this daring mix of styles that gives The Turning its creative energy and distinct off-kilter flavour.

A superb achievement; an hypnotic evocation of modern Australia as we were in the 1970s...and remain today. Seventeen vignettes woven together to shape a profound portrait of Tim Wintons vision of his youth. Bravo Bob Connelly et al; and thank you.

As Soon As One Story Gets Going, It Abruptly Ceases (Typical Of Winton's Writing Style), Somewhat Unfinished, And On Again We Go To The Next One. I Found Such A Film Montage Very Frustrating To Watch. The Aussie Landscape / Photography Looked Fantastic, I Rate That Highly, With Some Stories Having An Inviting Theme Of Intrigue...But, The 3hrs Is Just Too Many Ideas To Sit Through. An Art Piece Of Short Character Work By A Host Of Aussie Actors Is All This Can Ever Hope To Be.
