As young dancers, they were best friends and fierce rivals. Deedee left the stage for marriage and motherhood, while Emma would become an international ballet icon. I SAW this in theaters when it came out and as a teenager, I loved everything about it. I rewatched it recently with an adult's eye and found most of it still endearing. maclaine and bancroft are wonderful and the dance sequences are breathtaking.

Wasn't paying the closest attention through most of the movie, but was totally enraptured whenever Baryshnikov took the stage...he just takes my breath away--like watching something supernatural happening! Leslie Browne danced well, too, but cannot act! And why is Tom Skerritt always in estrogen-charged dramas?

B- Not aging terribly well, with an overdramatized storyline, it remains an interesting case study of a modern woman's struggle.
