A great story full of meaning and weight. I love John Heard in this movie as he walks the tight rope between his mother and his wife.

Basically a movie about going back to a memory, as an older woman travels back to a here hometown as it becomes clear it's nothing more than a ghost town now. Her daughter in law can be totally grating, and he son never stands up to her and that can be annoying. But Page is fantastic...acting a young as a child in her scenes. I loved everything once her and De Mornay seem to hook up on the journey for a time. And the end is some really solid stuff. Going back to old places always yields an avalanche of memories and emotions like that. Page totally deserved the Oscar!

An enjoyable story about an old bag who decides to leave her unrewarding life to go back to the town where she grew up. The main issue is the fact that the town may no longer exist. Sentimental but sweet.

Based on the 1953 television play and celebrated Broadway show, writer Horton Foote's wonderfully simple yet emotionally resonant story, set in 1947, of an elderly woman's journey back to her home in the all but deserted Bountiful, Texas, is still as touching and effective as it ever was. Actress Geralidine Page won a much deserved Oscar for her portrayal of Carrie Watts, an aging woman, living with her son (a terrifically understated John Heard) and his shrewish wife (Carlin Glynn), whose life of regret moves her to try and reconnect with a house, a town, and a past that can no longer be reclaimed. A beautiful and unpretentious story that will stay with you long after it has finished.
