The Train (1964)

As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

Amazing. John Frankenheimer once again proved that he was a master of the action-thriller genre. While this film is filled with spectacular action and FX, it doesnt reduce the film to standard popcorn fare. The grace with which the technical and the emotional aspects of the film are captured weave together so seamlessly that by the end, despite its simple message, you can still feel the full measure of its power. The ideas here are original and Paul Scofield really layers his character in a way that is very uncommon for war movies of this era. A heady, thought-provoking, taut and fulfilling flick worthy of comparison to Hitchcock even. Definitely worth checking out!

Absolutely top notch cast, photography, editing and direction. Paul Scofield is brilliant and so is Burt Lancaster in a dour turn as a French railroad man during the Resistance.

Powerful film, maybe more powerful to todays audience than those of the time period. I wish more people knew about this movie.

THE TRAIN is a well-crafted WWII thriller about Nazis stealing art out of France before the end of the war, and a top secret mission by an American soldier to stop them. Shot in black & white with a steady hand by director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate), THE TRAIN is just the kind of entertaining joyride that just doesn't get made much these days. It's smart, thrilling and raises a good question--just what is the worth of art in comparison to human lives?

Olipa tunnelmallinen B/W elokuva. Ei tällaisia leffoja enää tehdä... Kaikki on nykyään yhtä tehostekikkailua.
