The Train (1964)

As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

Another Frankenheimer classic regarding the theft and transfer of classic artwork during WW2 by the Germans- and the French resistance attempts to prevent it. Burt Lancaster leads the Resistance efforts culminating in a truly amazing train crash- filmed for real- no CGI nonsense here! Frankenheimer was renowned for his car chases-but he ended up soon okay with trains too.

My new favorite war film. John Frankenheimer may be known for a film like Ronin, but he was around to make some fantastic films in the 60s. The plot may sound bland - famous paintings from Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, and others are taken from the French by the Nazis, and are put on a train to Germany. Burt Lancaster is the head of a railroad crew, and is in charge of running the trains for the Nazis. His mission eventually becomes to prevent the Nazis from taking the cargo across the border, while keeping it in tact. Half the film takes place on the tracks, yet it's an incredibly intense and suspenseful film. Ronin fans will recognize Frankenheimer's distinct style, as it's incredibly well crafted. Lancaster delivers an engaging performance and is helped by a great supporting cast. There's plenty of action, humor, and wartime drama, and it blends together perfectly, without the use of any CGI, to create quite a roller coaster of a picture.

Bogs down a bit toward the beginning with too much "train porn," and everything with Jeanne Moreau is boring, but once the train actually gets started this turns into a subtle yet masterful dramatization of a true story. Amazing camerawork and action, with Lancaster doing his own stunts (who needs CGI?), and Paul Scofield makes for a fascinating antagonist. (If you want to see those two actors in an even better action pic, check out "Scorpio.") Very thought-provoking and confrontational ending.

A very watchable old war film, that keeps you engaged.

Lancaster is blinding in this tragi-thriller.Incredible stunts and crashes.Action upon action plus sensitivity in the right places...poor driver Bull being rumbled in sabotage...the train crashes...duping a German soldier in to believing he is in the right towns...Lancaster limping to derail train...evil massacre of innocents in the name of art.
