“Dunjia” is exuberant and visually inventive, notably in the ways it incorporates text into the images. It also benefits from engaging performances. But the story is motley and not very involving, and the anything-goes CGI undermines the battle sequences.

I'm a fan of both the director and writer/producer of this film so was expecting great things, well, at least a fun ride! I didn't get it. What I got was a convoluted, confusing plot, overwrought, messy CGI and FX, and stereotyped characters more suited to Chinese TV historical soap operas. The idea was intriguing: an alien race vying for control in ancient China, but, alas, it doesn't seem to have been carefully enough thought through. The film does have its moments, though, just not enough of them! It gets 3 stars from me primarily because of the period sets, which look great and the cinematography is pretty good, too. The cast do well with what they've got, which isn't much, so a star for effort. Overall, though, somewhat disappointing.

Watched the movie yesterday, deeply enjoyed it and impressed by some very interesting geopolitical implications embedded in the movie. Very entertaining and thought provoking. Many thanks to the production team that give me this wonderful movie experience.

THis movie meets expectations, ignore the ratings where it does not stand Up tO American CGI comparisons. For the storyline, caSt, crew, and budget, a solid four.

It is heartening to see director Yuen, who is known for his action movies, attempt something new, but it will be a while before he masters the art of making a CGI-heavy film.
