Guh do I love this movie. Not my favorite that I've seen but great!

the first of an amazing 26 movie series starring shintaro katsu. This one is stylistically different in that the pacing is markedly slower. far from hindering the experience, the pace impregnates each moment with subtext. enriched by wonderful swordplay and gorgeous cinematography.

I watched the 2003 remake, and naturally got curious about the original. Much like a western, Zatoichi (a blind masseuse turned swordsman) wanders into town and gets enmeshed in the gang conflict that's just coming to a boil. Will his sense of justice and honor be satisfied? There's not a lot of action, but plenty of gently compelling characters and filmmaking.

A japanese classic, the Zatoichis are consistently entertaining samurai films. Do not hesitate for the original.
