Well paced story and some great action scenes, wonderful characters with the two stars Shintaro Katsu and the enigmatic Toshiro Mifune both in fine form. The film has plenty of gore, pathos and wonderful touches of humour mixed together which makes me wonder why if this film came out in the late sixties have we eally progressed at all. This has no CGI, wirework or grossly overpaid actors, and would be difficult to replicate now we have reached the new millennium!

Talk about a misleading film, coming into this I thought it would be the Yojimbo from the best samurai film of all time (Yojimbo) witht he John Wayne of Japan Mifune reprising his character. Instead he plays someone more or less different, using the Yojimbo name to lead people into thinking other wise. However it is not a bad samurai film but for the fact that it misleads you is what sucks the most.

A really deeply-layered story that unfolds in a mysterious way and pits two masters against each other. This was my first experience with Katsu and, while I liked him, I found him to be rather mismatched against Mifune, who was awesome as usual. He plays a more cold-hearted variation of his earlier Yojimbo character, but there's still lots of jokes to be had (from both swordsmen.) The ending was a bit strange, but cool all the same.

This was slow in some spots and I feel like some parts could have been cut out. This is a must see for all fans of Zatoichi!
