The Summit (2013)

The Summit is a 2012 documentary film about the 2008 K2 disaster directed by Nick Ryan. It combines documentary footage with dramatized recreations of the events of the 2008 K2 disaster. On the way to and from the summit, eleven climbers died during a short time span creating one of the worst catastophes in climbing history. Much of the documentary footage was captured by Swedish mountaineer Fredrik Sträng. Sträng was planning to do a Documentary which was aborted due to the fact that he did not reach the summit. The footage was still valuable to help solving what really did happen since all the climbers had different stories about what happened.

recounts a harrowing tale of endurance, heroism, majesty and human psychology, but for a sport defined by slow, steady progress, Nick Ryan simply jumps around too much.

Seeing other reviews left me very disappointed. Not for the film. The film is fantastic and very well explained.. Disappointed that one must have paid little attention to the film to say it was "confusing." Love this film. It is both fulfilling and clarifying as well as well directed and graphically competent.

it had some great scenery and it was well filmed, not the greatest documentary though it was pretty slow, could of been shorter.

Nick Ryan’s documentary looks at the disaster by using interviews, actual footage and re-enactments. The latter move undercuts some of the movie’s authenticity. Granted, there probably wasn’t another way to film it, but it muddies the film’s sense of truth.

THE SUMMIT skirts some of the mysteries of the loss of 11 climbers on K2 in 2008, likely because there are no clear answers. Unfortunately we learn very little about most of the 11; instead the focus is on two of the eleven who lost their lives. Not sure why.
