Though the homosexual subtext was daring for the 1950s, the film is much softer than the play.

"THE STRANGE ONE" IS A STRANGE ONE! (original print ad - all caps) You'll never forget BEN GAZZARA as the louse, "Jocko" "The Most Fascinating Louse You Ever Met!" Debut of Ben Gazzara (Happiness, Summer of Sam) and George Peppard (A-Team), and first credited role for Pat Hingle (Tim Burton's Batman). According to Gazarra, he beat out James Dean for the lead role.
