Ministry of Fear (1944)

Stephen Neale is released into WWII England after two years in an asylum, but it doesn't seem so sane outside either. On his way back to London to rejoin civilization, he stumbles across a murderous spy ring and doesn't quite know to whom to turn.

Has an exciting plot and is properly atmospheric despite its cheap studio sets.

Groundbreaking thriller. I loved it despite its being a little dated.

A guy is released from a mental asylum and just wants to be around people again. He wins a cake after taking a fortune tellers advice and that's when things start going down hill for him when a man pretending to be blind tries to murder him for his cake. It's a brilliant little WWII thriller that never lets up.

Did Fritz Lang ever make a bad film? While this is definitely lighter Lang, there are so many psycotronic elements in this that make it a blast to watch. He borrows heavily from Hitchcock, using both a wrong man accused plot and not one but two blonds to fill both the femme fatale role and the ingenue. Not to mention a nice MacGuffin of a cake "made with real eggs" to get the action going. Filled with nazi paranoia and the fear of lost sanity, Lang frames most of his shots as if shooting a horror film. He goes that extra mile to mix in a seance for just the right sort of "what the hell am I watching?". Definitely a weird one, especially as far as WWII espionage films go, but worth checking out.

This film noir, one more by Fritz Lang, about a Nazi conspiracy in London could be naive for our times, but is well constructed and gives you only little cues about the end.
