The Song of Bernadette (1943)

In 1858 Lourdes, France, adolescent peasant Bernadette has a vision of "a beautiful lady" in the Massabielle grotto - the townspeople assume this lady to be the Virgin Mary. Pompous government officials think the girl is insane, doing their best to suppress her and her followers, while the church wants nothing to do with the matter. But as Bernadette attracts wider and wider attention, the phenomenon overtakes everyone in the town, ultimately transforming their lives.

In comparison with [i]Bernadette[/i] (1990), this film is a masterpiece. All comparisons aside, however, this isn't that great of a film either. The acting from everyone [i]except[/i] the lead actress (Jennifer Jones) is superb, and the script and direction are mediocre. Even so, it's mildly entertaining, and that's more than I can say about the newer version. It might be worth a look.

I love this movie for so many reasons... yes the spiritual part gets me, and believing in something you cant see but knowing its really there if only you have faith enough to open your heart you might be able to open your eyes enough to see. But I love Jennifer her innocence & performance is so touching I just had to see & watch other movies she played in to see if I got the same feeling or was it the movie itself.

Watched it several times a year in private school. It is one of my favorite Saint movies. I absolutely love St. Bernadette...so much that I chose her name for my Confirmation name!
