Melville called it an "anti-cinematic" film, and he creates the expressiveness in what remains unspoken, the glances and gestures that take on grand drama in the minimalist presentation.

Action packed WWII thriller with such rollercoaster sequences like smoking pipe, warming at the fireplace and playing Bach with the home organ.

First film written and directed by influential film maker Jean Pierre Melville which centers on three people. Based on an actual book set in WWII involving a high ranking German officer( Howard Vernon) issued to live with an elderly uncle( Jean-Marie Robain) as he narrates the entire experience as him and his niece (Nicole Stéphane) just when France was being occupied. The high ranking German officer, at first has some misconceptions about the Third Reich's intentions of why they reside in France as viewers already know throughout that his ideals is not the case at all.

From the novel by Vercors, first movie by Melville, after the short one with Beby the clown. It is the story of a German officer in love with France and its culture who discovers the true motivations of the occupation. The movie shws an unbearable pain of a man who stands alone, as most of the Melville gangsters. A great work testifying and not just celebrating the civilian resistance. An unforgettable experience.

Not much to say. It really left no impression on me at all. It's okay, I guess.
