Kurt Gerstein—a member of the Institute for Hygiene of the Waffen-SS—is appalled to discover that a poison gas he helped discover is being used to kill Jews. Driven by his conscience to alert the rest of the world, Gerstein teams up with a young Jesuit priest, Riccardo Fontana, but their protestations fall on deaf ears in the Vatican.

This is, by far, my favorite historical subject. Just when I thought that I have seen it all, and learned it all, another view of that horrific time comes to light. It's appalling to believe that the world stood still while millions of Jews were being sent to death camps. It's even more apalling (and blows my mind) that so many COULD have tried to stop it, but didn't due to political reasons and more. Although this film shows how the Catholic Church refused to stand up to Hitler, it also shows how a few were willing to die for the sake of humanity...including an actual SS Officer. Don't look for flash, excitement, and gore here. This is an intense, thought provoking drama. Well done!

Excellent film. It not olny portrays the nazi side and the scientist side, but also the religious points of view, using the Vatican's role inside the war. The script's very well built, and acieves in presenting the stories of both a nazi scientist that tries to stop the massive killing of jews, and a Jesuit priest that tries, with all his means, to fight Nazism, both inside and out the Vatican. The performances are very convincing, and overall it's a really sad story, yet really good, still.

Perfect! Powerful movie on the subject of engagement, personal responsibility and the profound horror that lurks in the human spirit... The alienating, desensitizing power of hierarchy and man's confrontation to his own fear! ... "All that evil needs to triumph is the inaction of good men!" ... Acting is poignant but not overdone! ... Also nicely cinical!

Fantastic! Absolutely Fantastic! A must watch for all those who love Steven Speilberg's Schindler's List. This is a movie that tells the holocaust in the eyes of a German SS and a Roman Catholic Priest in Germany. The holocaust made a little more sense to me after watching this
