As opulent and decadent as can be imagined, Von Sternberg's vision of early court life is suffused in shadows and grotesqueries unlike most films of this sort, bringing to mind the axiom of absolute power corrupting absolutely. The story's not so good, but the imagery will stay with you.

The movie was visually stunning. I really liked the scenes where Marlene Dietrich would gaze through gauze or netting in that alluring way of hers. And she got some pretty good lines, as did the Empress Elizabeth, her predecessor. And the actor who played Peter III, did a pretty good job of looking and acting seriously creepy.

Filled with gargantuan sets that include hideous gargoyles and horrible statues of martyrs writhing in pain, this film is about as historically accurate as a Monty Python movie! But who cares??? Besides its monumental decors that seem straight out of a Gothic horror movie, "The Scarlet Empress" features Marlene Dietrich at her seductive best... And let's not forget Sam Jaffe as the demented Peter III! Watch out for the expression of glee on that maniac's face as he gets married to Catherine of Russia... YIKES!!!
