The Scarlet Empress (1934)

During the 18th century, German noblewoman Sophia Frederica, who would later become Catherine the Great, travels to Moscow to marry the dimwitted Grand Duke Peter, the heir to the Russian throne. Their arranged marriage proves to be loveless, and Catherine takes many lovers, including the handsome Count Alexei, and bears a son. When the unstable Peter eventually ascends to the throne, Catherine plots to oust him from power.

One of the greatest collaborations in movie history, the five films Dietrich made with Von Sternberg. This was one of the best a great example of control and visual style.

a visually dynamic film with sternbergs use of gothic set, oddly proportioned statues of grotesque men lining the walls and expressionist lighting. its less interesting on pretty much every other level, though diestrichs performance is fun at certain moments.

Pure opulent joy from beginning to end. This is a film from a man who's key direction must always have been "There's some empty space in that shot. Fill it with something spectacular! (like Marlene Dietrich.)"
