Another mid-60s entry from Hammer Films (one of a series of movies, including Plague of the Zombies, that was filmed back-to-back using some of the same sets, cast, and crew). You can expect the usual creepy atmosphere and attentive art direction. After a mysterious death before the opening credits, the suspense builds and builds - in fact, pretty much the whole film is just about the central characters trying to figure out what is going on in this desolated Cornish town. Michael Ripper is very charismatic as the helpful publican. The final act wherein we discover what Dr Franklin has brought back with him from India (or further east?) is actually pretty weird, which raises my rating (naturally!). I won't spoil it for you.

same crew and cast and film sets for plaque of the zombies - and despite some dodgy moments it is a good hammer horror

sub-par Hammer work is interesting for having a female villain, but this is no Frankenstein Created Woman. The suspense is hardly there, the acting is comparatively light, and the monster is oddly restrained. A good third act makes this watchable, but it's a muddle until things go really crazy.

small budget, but creepy...and you'll never realise how good Hammer could make silk purses out of sows eras....watch and enjoy!

Excellent mostly forgotten Hammer movie that has a great atmosphere and some fun performances. Noel Willman's amazingly OTT reactions as the father of the titular Reptile truely make the movie, particularly in the classic 'hypnotism' scene when his daughter is playing the sitar - it'd be criminal to spoil that one. Jacqueline Pearce is also pretty good in a role that doesn't really require much from her, but provides a good contrast to her performance as Blakes' 7 evil Servalan later in her career. It's a lot of fun and the only disappointing factor in the movie is the method of dispatch. It's like they couldn't think of anything and just ended the movie in the cheapest way they could. An embarassing end to an otherwise original and worthwhile Hammer venture.
