Have to give this one 5 stars as its an excellent B&W movie, about life in India. Myma Loy plays Lady Edwina Esketh who is married to Nigel Bruce (Watson Sherlock Holmes) who playes her husband and is very mean. Meanwhile George Brent plays Tom Ransome who is Lady Esketh old flame. Also in this movie Maria Ouspenskaya is The India Prime Minister she was in Tarzan and Wolf man. So there are so many good actors in this movie and the sum all adds up to one excellent movie, 5 stars

Interesting love-triangle story with a great cast. Loy, Bruce (in an a-typical role) and Power are in fine form. Oscar winning film for Best Special Effects is worth a look.

I had to see the movie that beat out the Oscar of special effects for Wizard of Oz's cyclone and Gone with the Wind's burning of Atlanta. And this movie's flash flood was impressive for its time. That said, I found the characters very shallow with wooden portrayals from the actors. I mean if you had just drank from a diseased cup and realized you were going to die, I doubt you would act as subdued as our leading lady. It's overall entertaining as far as an old movie goes, but I side with the Academy in that all it deserved was an award for impressively flooding the set.

Tyrone Power is miscast, but by standards of the time, this was a prestige, lavish production, winning an Oscar for Special Effects (spectacular flood).

Nothing redeems the reputation of a "fallen" woman like natural disaster or illness. Just ask Greta Garbo in "The Painted Veil", Elizabeth Taylor in "Elephant Walk" or Eleanor Parker in "The Naked Jungle" and "The Seventh Sin". Audiences love to see a woman who has slid slightly off the moral track win back approval by pitching in during the aftermath of a plague or an earthquake, even if, in some cases, she doesn't make it herself... Love, disaster, melodrama, colonial India in the rains--Old-Fashioned Exotic Melodrama with a Smoldering Loy and Special Effects That Still Impress... Way ahead of it's time, beautiful cinematography!!
