Beyond Rangoon (1995)

Dr. Laura Bowman is a young widow who's unwittingly drawn into political turmoil while vacationing in Burma in the late 1980s. Bowman initially left San Francisco with her sister in an attempt to escape painful memories of her husband and son's violent deaths. But her fight to escape to Thailand could prove just as harrowing.

I liked this movie and the portraying of the situation in Burma is very real, though I doubt this was filmed in Burma.

In attempting to make its politics palatable as entertainment, the film has grafted them onto a boatload of Hollywood implausibilities whose excesses cripple believability.

Seems less about the horror suffered by the Burmese than the inconvenience suffered by an American tourist who has lost her passport.

Arquette's performance in this film was incredible. You can feel her character's depression and detachment to the world. This film is definitely a must see.
